At
68 Church Street, within the boundaries of the original
walled city of Charleston, we’re building
a home of handsome romance, worthy of sonnets. Wrapped
in a centuries-old garden wall, the sparkling new
4,800-square-foot residence includes an enchanting
front garden with swirling gates and fountain, and
a private driveway entrance at the rear - complete
with double garage. And, as if in a storybook, there
are tiered Juliet balconies, secret garden spaces,
and the most sumptuous spa-level bath in all of
Charleston.
Building on the footprint of a prior residence at
the rear of the lot created the opportunity for
the home’s most defining features… 68
Church has a pedestrian entrance from Church Street
and a private driveway from Longitude Lane. Iron
gates and walls of stucco and brick enclose two
gardens – a deep, terraced front garden with
a fountain wall as its centerpiece, and a “secret”
courtyard garden with custom-forged Juliet balconies
above.
Building anew on a historic street that treasures
gardens gave architect Sandy Byers and designer
Paola Thomas the enviable opportunity to fully integrate
the interior and garden spaces. Instead of stepping
directly from Church Street into the house, the
front garden becomes an entry room – with
ascending stone terraces to the front door, past
a fountain wall. Inside, enchanting features include
a gourmet kitchen and butlery with top-tier appliances,
Italian marble countertops and custom-milled mahogany
cabinets. A private, upstairs media room is accessed
by its own staircase. And baths fit for a princess
– or a prince – may be had in a tub
set on railway beams, overlooking the garden courtyard
below.
